War On Poverty
LBJ introduced the "War on Poverty" which eventually led to the creation of Medicare and Medicaid.
I thought it was interesting to see the following quote from LBJ...
"This administration today, here and now, declares unconditional war on poverty in America." - Lyndon B. Johnson
A lot has been said over the last few years about George W's declaration of a "war on terror" and it just struck me to see such a similar phrase used by LBJ.
Smoking May Be Hazardous
It was in 1964 that the US Surgeon General stated that smoking may be hazardous for one's health. It was apparently the first time the US government had officially made this statement.
I want to hold your hand
Beatlemania apparently began in the US with the release of I want to hold your hand.
Hoffa
Jimmy Hoffa is convicted of federal jury tampering.
Mustang
The first Ford Mustang is produced.
Jack Ruby
A jury in Dallas convicts Jack Ruby of killing Oswald.
Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela makes his "I am prepared to die" speech. He is then sentenced to life in prison.

The US State Department discovers that the US Embassy in Moscow has been heavily bugged.
Warren Commission
The Warren Commission releases its report on the assassination of JFK.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
MLK becomes the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Nikita Khrushchev
Khrushchev is deposed in the Soviet Union. Brezhnev takes over.
LBJ Defeats Goldwater
With over 60% of the vote, LBJ defeats Goldwater in the US Presidential Election.
Berkeley Free Speech Movement
Over 800 students are arrested after their massive takeover and sit-in protesting University of California Regents' decision to forbid Vietnam War protests on their property.
Heart of Atlanta Motel
The US Supreme Court rules in Heart of Atlanta Motel v. United States that public accommodations must refrain from racial discrimination.
BASIC
John George Kemeny and Thomas Eugene Kurtz create BASIC (Beginners' All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code).
It is easy to think that the time that we live in is the most important in history. But, I think by looking back at all of the events from previous years we can see that very significant events are happening all of the time.
